Meetings are rarely necessary. In fact, some people could argue that they are a waste of time. If you need to discuss something intricate or sensitive in nature then a meeting makes sense; otherwise, here are 5 reasons why you should cancel your next meeting.

#1 Meetings Don’t Increase Productivity

According to Inc., “business leaders spend an average of 72 percent of their time in meetings during any given week. And the more time you spend in meetings, the more time your email inbox is likely filling up while the meetings add more to-dos to your growing list. Not only can excessive meetings leave less time for you to complete work, but it can cost your business a significant amount of money. In fact, up to $37 billion per year is spent in unproductive meetings.”

The morale of the story is meetings are costing you money, time, and energy that you can’t afford to spend.

#2 Most People Dislike Meetings

When you dislike something, is it harder or easier to deal with? Obviously, it is much harder to deal with. If most people dislike meetings, are they likely to be inspired or feel creative? Probably not. If employers want to encourage the best work product from their employees, why torture them with doing things they dislike? Just send an email!

How many meetings have you attended that didn’t have an agenda or didn’t stick to it? If you are going to mandate people attend a meeting, shouldn’t the conversation be extremely focused on specific topics that need to be discussed with those in attendance?

#4 It’s Easy to Lose Track of Time

It’s easy to lose track of time when you are in a meeting. If there isn’t an agenda, who knows where the conversation will go. If you enjoy the people you work with, you definitely know the conversation will become extremely unproductive very quickly. Time is the most important asset we have in our life. Who wants to waste it in a meeting?
